trailering mare with a colt?
im thinking about getting a paint mare with a 5 month old colt, but they live like two hours away. I have a 3 horse slant trailer that i took the dividers out of ( have a gelding with trailering issues.) so i was thinking putting one divider in for the mare and tie her up like i usually would then let the colt loose in the back since i dont think hes halter trained? i have thick rubber mats on the floor and lk half way up the sides. so would that b good then jus check on them? mayb put some hay out for them too?
We have hauled several unhandled, unhaltered weanlings (5 were range colts bought at auction over the years, one a BLM mustang and one a rescue)throughout the midwest. We have a stock trailer with a center divider that almost goes to the floor. We never tie weanlings. They do not understand the yield to pressure and will panic, break a neck, jump into a manger, anything.
If we are hauling 2 together, we put each loose in a stall. If your dividers would allow a colt to get feet or body underneath, you may want to not use them at all. Your other issue would be a separation problem with baby and Mom if you put each in part of the trailer, depending upon how much your divider restricts his nearness to Mom.
If you think your divider is safe and you wish to go that route, try it first before you leave. If colt goes ballistic while you are parked, have a way to get in without getting hurt and open the divider and let him have the rest of the trailer with mom tied the way you were going to do.
