We painted a cabinet with flat black KRYLON Acrylic Latex Enamel two weeks ago.?
It is still too tacky to handle. We are in humid Central Florida so that is a factor but it appears that this paint is never going to kick. We brought the drawers indoors under air but they are still just as tacky. Any experts out there?
Some paints absorb moisture from the atmosphere and this causes the chemistry of the polymerization to change. Perhaps that is what has caused the slow setup of your paint. One very humid evening years ago I painted a truck with acrylic enamel automotive paint and it took 2 years for that to really set up. If it hadn't been my own truck I would have had to strip it and repaint it.
Did you use a primer compatible with the existing coating on the cabinets and also your paint? The wrong primer can cause all kinds of heartburn. Other possible causes could be an incompatible coating originally painted on the cabinets which has mixed with the acrylic paint to make a mess. Cooking oils can really screw up a paint job. Did you wash the cabinets thoroughly with TSP and thinner before painting?
You could have purchased a bad batch of paint from Krylon. I have used Krylon quick dry lacquer based paints for years with good results but recently I have had trouble with being able to apply a second coat without it lifting the first. I think they have changed the chemistry.
There is a customer service number on the can if I'm not mistaken and sometimes a call to them actually ends up helping.
Unfortunately, sometimes with paint jobs, if the coating you apply does not do what it is supposed to do, all you can do then, is clean it all off and start over with a paint product which you know works, applied on a properly prepared surface.
Every painter knows that 90% of the paint job is preparation of the surface for the paint. Applying the paint is the easy part. The importance of preparation is the part they leave out of the instructions.

It depends on what you want to do with the beads . . . what you want them to look like. If you want an all-over color and don't need it to be bright, you could dye them. If you want bright colors, you'll have to use acrylic paints -- it's the only reasonably simple way to get bright colors that are relatively durable on natural-finished (not white) wooden beads. Alternatively you could spray-paint them white, but then you'd still probably want to use acrylics as they would be the easiest sort of paint that would adhere to the primer.

Can I varnish over painted furniture surface?
I have some lovely painted antique furniture and I just learned that they might contain lead paint. With a baby coming I want to apply varnish on top of the painted surface. Is it possible? any preparation needed? I can't sand it because it will cause lead dust. Any varnish product to recommend? What do u think about the Olympic varnish products? Thank you.
Check with a paint co. isn't there some kind of test kit, to test for lead paint. Maybe if there is lead, you can put a sealer on it.

Painting furniture (jewelry armoire)?
I know I'm getting a white jewelry armoire from my friend for Christmas and was wondering how I would go about painting it black (or spray paint, whatever is more convenient) since white does not go with the rest of my bedroom furniture. Since the piece of furniture has never been used before do I still have to go about sanding and priming it. Any advice is appreciated!

Remove all the drawers and all the hardware. Sand the entire surface and wipe off any sanding dust. Prime and paint using semi or gloss sheen. Replace the hardware, and re-assemble.
Big job, because of all the decorations and turnings. Use spray pant and primer.

People of every time period have been superstitious about witches, mainly evil witches that would do them harm. They would take any and every precautionary step necessary to repel witch spells from entering their homes. Some German immigrants that came to Pennsylvania starting in the 1700's used 'hex' designs to ward off evil spells. Hex means witch in German and of course hex is also a Greek root word meaning six. These beautiful six-sided geometric designs,hexagrams, were painted over doorways,on barns and on what was considered a very important piece of furniture, the hope chest.
The hope chest, also known as a dowry chest or blanket chest, was the piece of furniture in every newly weds' home which held household items like quilts, bed linen and baby clothes. More importantly, these blanket chests held the family heirlooms as well. So in order to prevent any evil spell damage in the home in case their outside counter measures failed, hope chests were given these beautiful designs. These hex designs were also to ensure good luck for the household. Some groups of German immigrants, such as the Amish and the Mennonites, rarely, if ever, had these types of designs placed on buildings or on their blanket chests. These religious groups were known as the 'plain people' and their lives were ran accordingly. Every aspect of life needed to be plain such as clothing, the interior of their homes and their furniture. They rarely added any embellishments of any type to their possessions. The religious Germanic groups known to wear 'fancy' dress such as the Lutherans and other reformed groups, would have used hex designs on their hope chests. Some historians contend that hex designs were never meant to chase away evil spells, but rather to just add a nice touch to other wise drab furnishings.
Hex signs are normally geometric designs varying from the extremely simple to the complex. Many woodcrafters learned to add these symbols to homes and blanket chest furniture in a very stylish manner, incorporating the tree of life, hearts, circles(the sun), birds, stars, foliage and flower design elements. These design symbols had specific meanings so families would incorporate those they favored into a family design. The meanings for the most used of these symbols were: the tree of life for longevity, hearts for love and kindness, tulip for faith, 3 tulips for faith, hope and charity, star for luck, sun wheel for warmth and fertility, the circle for eternity or infinity, doves for peace and contentment, four pointed star for a bright day, eagle for good health, strength and courage, horse head for protecting against animal disease and buildings from lightning strikes, maple leaf for contentment, oak leaf for strength, 4 quarter moons for the seasons of the year, rain drops for fertility, abundance and rain, rosette for good luck and to keep away bad luck and evil, twelve pointed rosette for a joyous month each month of the year, triple star for success, wealth and happiness, unicorn for virtue, piety and the belief in God, wavy border for smooth sailing through life and birds (distelfinks) for good luck.
These designs were very colorful when added to hope chests. This created a warm atmosphere in the room where the blanket chest was placed. Of course the colors chosen for the hex designs also had meanings for these families. Red stood for strong emotions, yellow stood for the love of man, green stood for growing things, blue stood for protection, white stood for purity and brown stood for Mother Earth.
People now use hex designs mainly for decorative uses,especially on blanket chests, although there are those who use them for folk magic. Have fun with these designs. What can I do to the top of a cedar chest to make it look presentable?
I inherited this old Cedar Chest, that would look great in my living room as it matches the wood of other furniture. The problem is the cedar chest itself is in good shape, with the exeption of the top which is scraped and worn, and has all sorts of weird colors coming through. I guess I could paint the top of it, but are there any other crafty suggestions that I could do simply to fix up the top( the lid) so to speak. Right now I have a funky Afgan (sp) covering it with another cover, which looks ok, but I would like to take them off and have the chest speak for itself----tiles, contact paper, paint.....I am open!
You already seem to know the answer. Try decoupage. Simple white glue mixed with water and a few old family pics(copies of course), cuttings from magazines, wrapping paper, tissue paper and viola' you have a beautiful keepsake. Good luck

In July 1845, after the Texas Congress approved the terms of annexation offered by the United States, President James K. Polk dispatched General Zachary Taylor and his Federal troops to the small Texas settlement of Corpus Christi at the mouth of the Nueces River. The Mexican government had long claimed the Nueces as the border between Texas and Mexico, but based on the Treaties of Velasco signed by Santa Anna after the Texas Revolution, the Texans insisted the border was the Rio Grande. In late December, the United States Congress officially recognized the Rio Grande as the border, and General Taylor prepared to move his troops south into the land between the two rivers known as the Nueces Strip; an act that would doubtless initiate hostilities between the United States and Mexico.
The Texas Rangers were long familiar with the practically lawless Nueces Strip, and Major Jack Hays personally rode to Corpus Christi, offering the services of his Rangers to act as scouts for the army. General Taylor, who had never trusted irregulars like the Rangers, declined Hays's offer, believing the responsibility of the Rangers lay with defending the Texas frontier against the Comanches. However, bitter experience soon proved General Taylor's dragoons could never hope to match the speed and mobility of the well-mounted Mexican cavalry. By the time the United States officially declared war on Mexico May 13, 1846, Taylor was asking for 5,000 Texas volunteers, including Hays's Rangers.
It was during the interlude between Hays's offer to provide scouts and General Taylor's reluctant acceptance, that the Texas Rangers fought one of their most memorable encounters with the Comanches at the Battle of Painted Rock in present day Llano County. Not long after Hays returned to San Antonio from Corpus Christi, word arrived of a huge Comanche war party, nearly 600 warriors strong, putting the torch to settlements southwest of town. Knowing he could never catch the Comanches by following their trail, Hays took forty Rangers and rode hard for Enchanted Rock a well-known Indian landmark, hoping to intercept the war party before the warriors escaped into the far reaches of the Comancheria.
Hays and his Rangers reined up at Enchanted Rock early the following morning only to find they had barely missed the Comanches, but the Lipan scouts found a fresh trail heading off to the northwest. Hays knew a small lake at the base of Painted Rock served as the only watering hole in that direction for miles around and he made a fateful decision. Facing odds of nearly fifteen to one, the Rangers set out to beat the Comanches to the water.
Forty-two hours and 130 miles later the Rangers did exactly that, reaching the lake at 1:00 in the morning, well ahead of the Comanches. After picketing the horses to the rear, Hays concealed his men in a willow thicket on the north shore; the only approach to the water. On the south rim, the face of Painted Rock rose some one hundred feet above the shimmering moonlit surface of the lake.
The war party approached the lake at dawn, thirsty, saddle-weary, and expecting to set up camp for the remainder of the day. Hays let the warriors get as close as possible to the willow thicket before giving the command to open fire. Smoke and fire billowed out of the trees with the roar of the Rangers' rifles, and the Comanches fell back in disarray, carrying off as many of their dead as they could. However, a few alert warriors spotted the Rangers' trail as they rode out of range. The tracks clearly showed there were no more than thirty or forty Rangers concealed in the thicket. With their superior numbers, the Comanches believed a force of that size could easily be overwhelmed in the full light of the new day.
The first Comanche charge came out of the northeast, ensuring that the rising sun would shine in the Rangers' eyes. With their short bows, long war lances, and thick buffalo hide shields tough enough to turn a rifle ball, feathers and colored ribbons fluttering in the breeze, the Comanches created quite a spectacle. The warriors broke into a screaming, galloping charge when the war chief lowered his long lance.
Hays fired when the Comanches closed to within fifty yards and the Rangers joined in with a thunderous volley. Galloping past the willow thicket, the warriors released a barrage of arrows as they slid off to the sides of their horses to avoid the deadly Ranger rifle fire. Circling wide, the Comanches made a second charge past the thicket before pulling back to regroup for a lance charge that the Rangers quickly broke with the brutal firepower of their rapid firing Colt revolvers and muzzle-loading shotguns. The Comanches made several more gallops past the thicket throughout the remainder of the day before withdrawing to the prairie and setting up camp for the night. By now they were growing so desperate for water, they were forced to send a large party more than twenty miles for it.
Late the following morning, the Comanches launched a massive attack in four separate waves, attempting to get the Rangers to empty their weapons. A few of the warriors in the final wave managed to crash their way into the thicket, but they were again blown off the backs of their Painted Ponies by the Rangers who possessed the deadly five-shot Colts. Withdrawing to the top of Painted Rock, the Comanches fired arrows high into the air for the remainder of the day, attempting to arch them into the willow thicket. The arrows were ineffective from that range, but the Ranger long rifles managed to chalk up a few Comanche victims who carelessly exposed themselves on the rim of the high rock. As the sun began to set, the frustrated warriors again withdrew to the prairie and sent for water.
Early in the morning of the third day the Comanches attacked from several different angles at once, forcing the defenders to divide their fire. Realizing from the diminished volume of gunfire that the Rangers were running low on powder and ball, the war chief took his time, massing his warriors on the high ground to the northeast for one final attack. By mid-morning all was ready and he rode to the front of the war party, raising his feathered war lance high and haranguing the warriors into making one final supreme effort.
Screaming his fury, the war chief heeled his stallion to a gallop and led what was to be the final charge at the willow thicket. The Rangers picked up a target over the sights of their long rifles and waited for Hays to open fire, swallowing the fear that churned at their bellies as the painted warriors drew closer and taking up the slack in their triggers. At less than a hundred yards the war chief made a fatal mistake by turning on the back of his galloping pony to urge his warriors on. As he swung around, his buffalo hide shield turned with him, exposing his right side. Jack Hays chose that instant to open fire, and the war chief was dead before his body struck the tall grass of the prairie.
The death of the war chief broke the momentum of the charge, and a wail of anguish arose from 600 Comanche throats. Before the warriors could recover, Rangers up and down the line opened fire with a rolling volley of thunder and the leaderless warriors retreated as several more painted ponies were emptied. Hays ordered one of his men to rope the war chief's neck and drag the body back to the Ranger lines. The act infuriated the frustrated Comanches, and they galloped past the thicket one final time, launching a cloud of arrows before riding away to the northwest toward the Comancheria.
The Battle of Painted Rock was a complete victory for the Texas Rangers. More than 100 Comanche dead lay strewn across the prairie in front of the willow thicket. Incredibly, only one Ranger was wounded in the fighting, and one unlucky horse killed by a few arrows that fell from the rim of Painted Rock. With the dawn of the Mexican American War, Jack Hays would devote the remainder of his time with the Texas Rangers serving as a volunteer with the United States Army. Painted Rock was to be his final major engagement with the Comanches.

Instructions to Make Pony Bead Gift Basket
- Cut out the bottom portion of the milk jug after emptying and washing it completely.
- Place the milk jug upside down on a wax paper to avoid any stain or mark on the table on which you are working.
- Mix equal portion of water and glue in a bowl and mix it with paint brush.
- Cut the tissue papers into small square pieces. If not tissue paper you can use any kind of colored paper.
- Now apply the water and glue mixture on the outer side of the jug and paste the paper pieces there. Paste these completely so that everything is covered without a space.
- After fixing apply the mixture of glue and water above it.
- Let it dry.
- After it is completely dried place it in its upright position and with scissors make holes on the opposite side for handle.
- Get the pipe cleaner and pony beads. First attach the one end of the pipe cleaner in the one hole and weave the pipe cleaner with pony beads. Now attach the other end in the second hole to make the handle.
Your pony bead basket is ready to use in any way you want.

How do I bond with two abused ponies. One is a black 3 year old gelding and one is a black and white paint that 5 years old. The paint used to be a show pony, but her trainer abused her. If you are only interested in using them for something, it won't work, they pick up on that. but if you want to make a difference in their life, love them and let them know you expect nothing from them. givethem treats, and graze, and groom, if they let you, like others have suggested. but go slow. they will set the pace of when and what you can do with them. at the very start maybe try getting one's trust first, and the other will see that his/her friend has accepted you and give you a chance.

I would ask someone at a craft store because high temps can break the glass. I believe there is specfic painf for glass. Hope that helps.
