Can I paint my IKEA furniture?

I have the MALM bedroom collection from IKEA. I know its cheap but it was good for an apartment. I really hate the birch color and I want to change it to a darker color, perhaps cherry. The "wood" is made of Particleboard, Birch veneer, Clear acrylic lacquer. Is it possible to paint this or is it just going to result in a huge mess? Please provide (very) detailed instructions if it is possible. Thanks in advance!

I have painted several pieces of Ikea furniture. Spray paint is the best option for getting a smooth finish that is durable and lasts. You can also prime it with Zinsser, but be sure to use a foam roller and not a brush to avoid stroke marks. Then you can apply the latex over it again using a foam roller. In either case, seal it with a non-yellowing, UVB/UVA inhibiting, polyurethane to protect the finish and make it easier to clean. I have had NO success in attempting to use stains on Ikea furniture, you just cannot get a professional finish. But, if you want to have a cherry finish, try using the Olympic stain/paint that Lowes carries. It goes on like a paint but has a stain like appearance.

Painting is more than splashing colors

Painting is one home improvement method that makes a strong impact. Colors can instantly perk you up and change the ambience of your home so try painting in Jackson Tn. Painting is part and parcel of home renovation. It revives faded sidings and peeling walls. You can significantly improve your place by repainting it.

According to some interior painting contractors, repainting a house can dramatically increase its market value. Faux finishing painting can also increase the lifespan of your property though you have to do it correctly in order to attain maximum benefits. An Atlanta painter said house painting is a serious business and you have to do it right the first time so you don't have to repaint every year.
House painting entails quality time and the right amount of money and effort, even if you're hiring a pro. Professional exterior house painters and a href=http://www.propainting.biz/>interior house painters work efficiently from start to finish. Accomplishing a painting project can be very rewarding but before executing the job, here are some tips and notes you might want to consider.
• Summer is the best time for repainting your house especially its exterior.
• Choose the right paint. Good paint brands are durable and do not easily wear off or fade despite the years. Top quality paints are also easier to apply making your work much faster as it covers surfaces more quickly and with ease.

• Only apply a primer if the surface to be painted is porous or if the new paint is incompatible with the previous one like latex paint over alkyd painted surfaces.

• Repair damages and smoothen the surface to be painted. Free the surface from peeling, blistering and wrinkling but be careful not to scrape the wood or make it uneven. Smoothen the surface with appropriate tools like sandpaper, etc. The smoother the surface, the better will the paint look on it and the longer shall it last.

• Cover areas that DO NOT NEED painting. Use a masking tape (at least two to three inches thick) to secure a massive cloth or newspapers over objects that need to be covered such as windows or ceiling areas near the wall area to be painted. Be sure though to remove the pieces of tape after painting to avoid traces of adhesion. Also cover the floor area to protect it from paint drops.

• Paint from the topmost portion of the house going down. With your high quality four-inch brush, stroke paint from the gutters or eaves leading down to the lower surfaces. Cover three to four square feet sections at a time. Stroke paint in a down-up motion for concretes; follow the wood grain for wooden walls or panels.

• Clean-up. Use soap and water to clean latex paint and paint thinner for alkyds to thoroughly clean paintbrushes immediately after painting. Keep excess paint tightly enclosed in cans while seal used paint thinners in bottles or cans. Do not dispose thinners and paints on the ground; also do not burn these substances as they may cause wild fire or blow up your place. Bring these waste materials to a toxic dumpsite.

Protect Metal Handrails and Railings From Rust

Hand rails, railings and fencings are commonly made or iron. Sometimes wrought iron is used instead of pure iron or steel. Hand rails, fencing or railings can be found in commercial and residential premises. These parts of buildings are very much prone to rust.

It is difficult to keep them away from moisture. Iron fencing and railings in garden are exposed to rain, snow and dew all over the year. You can't help it. Rust on railings, hand rails and fences make them look ugly; the exterior of your house degrades. The edges of rusting metals get marred and hence they are risky - they often lead to small to serious injuries if not handled with full attention.

Top of all, risks of getting clothes torn and stained while passing by the rusted railings are almost unavoidable. Rusting for a long period of time makes metals weak and compels you to replace the railings.

Stop this malicious cycle of rusting on metal hand rails and railings forever. Practice proper rust treatment to protect your metal railings and add to its longevity.

A series of conditions is basically responsible for rust on metal hand rails, railings and fencings.

Most people apply protective coat of paints, primers or varnish to protect metal railings and hand rails from moisture. With time, paint dries out. As a result the surface of the coating cracks and the layer starts to peel off. Moisture starts attacking the metal through these small openings.

Scratches are quite common on railings and hand rails. Scratches damage the protective coat of paints and let moisture enter in and corrode the metal. Even a small scratch can lead to serious corrosion in the long run.

Sometimes rusting begins during construction. Once metal railings and hand rails are fitted, there should not be any delay in painting. If rusting begins before you apply the protective paint, you won't be able to save the metal. Rust will spread silently below the paint layer and force the paint to peel off eventually.

Before painting, make sure the metal is rubbed with sandpaper and brush to remove rust. You can use rust remover for metal to clean the metal.

In past, people used to apply several layers of protective coatings to make sure that moisture cannot attack the original metal. First layer of paint, than a coat of primer, then the second and final coating of waterproof paint used to be applied on metal railings and hand rails.

The process was time consuming. And once moisture could make it to the metal body, rusting used to begin underneath.

Today's organic rust cleaning products are good from all perspectives. Unlike mechanical abrasion method, spray based rust cleaners are easy to use. Being natural, the solution has no side effects. Healthy.

If you spray rust cleaning products on the bare metal before applying the paint, you ensure lifelong rust protection to the metal railings and handrails. The solution remains inside and keeps protecting the metal for the days to come. If somehow, the surface cracks letting moisture in, the pre-applied rust cleaning solution prevents rusting. And you get enough time to repair the cracks.

So follow this technique to protect your metal railings from rust. Use natural cleaning products to protect metal products - save money, save earth!

How do I paint rusted metal? It's a metal shelf.?

Knock off as much of the loose rust as you can with steel wool, then give it a good coat of Rust-Oleum primer, then a coat of whatever color you want it to end up (Rust-Oleum is good for that too). Anything else might make it look okay for the short term, but the rust would come through before long. Good luck!

American Impressionism. Part 2

Douglas Smith

"Because agriculture Weir remained relatively undeveloped, a visit here can be transported in time, "said Douglas Smith, an artist who recorded the landscape of Connecticut for several years and found it was easy to start a painting on the first morning of the departure of the magazine.

As in the usual way, using pencil studies potential subjects of painting in a sketchbook, Smith released a sketch box for an 8 "-X-10" oil study of one of those scenes. Designed and built the box and, in fact, started a business development with other artists.

Sketch box, you can for an artist to be right or left handed, compartments for brushes, paints and panels prepared. Uses the panels are made of cloth Smith on board (one hundred cartons junk percent) coated with lacquer, and short handle brushes are brushes or brush pile tolerated round handles were reduced to a shorter length.

Smith said the smaller oil sketches that allow it to quickly save changes model of light and shadow on the landscape. It uses as a reference when painting the scene on a large canvas, sketch based box compartment Metal Easel French.

"I leave with a large painting large brush with a mixture of ultramarine blue and sienna diluted with turpentine "says the artist." I have my palette of colors that blend in so I can turn to the light to judge color mixtures against those already on the canvas. begin to paint the masses, with an average of color, and quickly covers the entire canvas. The failure is a question of changing the color temperature of hot or cold, dark or light values, and hard or soft, while continuing to perfect the design. "

The color palette used in agricultural Weir Smith, including lead white, cadmium yellow light, cadmium orange, cadmium red, permanent rose, alizarin crimson, ultramarine blue, royal blue (Rembrandt), the permanent color dark green and sienna.

Joseph Keiffer

"My idea for this image is to walk the line between realism and abstraction, "Joseph Keiffer said after completing his painting of the farm on Lake Weir. "I wanted viewers to look twice in a familiar scene to show that reality is as rare as it is enough. "

This question is motivated Keiffer as an artist, as a trader, and critical. In a recent issue of the Journal of American Art, for example, writes that "... not good " realistic "painting of any period, it also contains within to make a good" abstract "composition, and, on the contrary, nothing" abstract " the paint is only considered "good" because it refers to the viewer's experience of reality. "

He continued: "I use the same criteria to judge of painting realistic and abstract true Are you what I do? Feel like I'm" there "? Will I feel anything? If so, what? "

Keiffer is highly respected in the city of New York for the exhibition of realist painting who set up the office and the gallery of the East Seventy-second Street that bears his name. Its activity as a collector, dealer, artist and given a background that few artists can claim to practice. Knowing the great American landscape painters of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, often near Keiffer paintings of his weekend house in the Catskill Mountains on sites that have attracted many famous artists.

Weir time, vegetation, cattle trampled around the pond. But today, the trees and shrubs form a dense ring around the water, making it difficult to base. Keiffer had to put in a precarious position on a patch of rock and soil slope to get a clear view of the water reflection. Once he started painting, however, he worked hard for several hours until the image had been established.

Donald Jurney

"I work this way because no one taught me something different," quipped Donald Jurney to describe their Painting Techniques landscape. "Most of what I know about painting, I found watching the work of artists he admired and with the reading of his approach." These comments help to explain why some of the methods used are different from other landscapers.

Artists gathered at the Farm Weir, Jurney certainly had wider range of oil colors. Appeared to be a little blue and green, it is possible that you can buy in a tube, some Holbein color component supply. "I suppose I could mix all the colors myself," Jurney said, "but I see no reason to worry. "

A handful of brushes and loans, most of them small tricks. The artist laughed as he admitted to often not as well equipped - his wife, Jeanne Griswold (who also attended the farm gate Weir), had purchased a batch of hair brushes for him in his last visit to New York.

Jurney maintained his best painting, he began each image, allowing themselves to build thicker and presentations detailed in the landscape. The round brushes also provided a degree of control would have been impossible with large plates or hazelnuts.

Despite this Jurney as some other activity to be addressed in paintings, small paintings, there were three impressive during the tour two days. What was particularly interesting about these images is that they are largely inventions only loosely based on the appearance current property. In addition, Jurney was able to articulate in great detail in a relatively short time. The small artist's brush strokes captured subtle transitions of light in the trees and grass in a field that has been suggested Weir property.

Tips on Oil Painting - Basic Palette

In this article I will detail the tube colors of a starter palette for beginning artists. These are in fact the colors I personally use most often

Here is the proposed 6-color palette:

 1. Lemon Yellow
      2. Cadmium Yellow
      3. Cadmium Red
      4. Permanent Rose (Alizarin Crimson)
      5. French Ultramarine
      6. Phthalo Blue
      7. Titanium White
      8. Ivory Black

Note that White and Black are generally not classified as colors.

A color is often known by different names depending on the manufacturer. For example, Permanent Rose is more or less the same as Alizarin Crimson.

The above palette has the capacity to produce very clean secondary colors, i.e., colors that are a mixture of just two tube colors.

Notice that there are two versions of each primary color (yellow, red, and blue). One is a cool version (i.e., leaning towards the blues and greens) and the other is a warm version (i.e., leaning towards the reds and yellows).

I recommend using this simple palette for quite a while before adding other tube colors. First learn to completely understand how the six colors together with black and white interact in their numerous mixtures.

Here are some of the more important properties of the palette colors:

* Lemmon Yellow - Lemmon Yellow is a cool, greenish leaning, and opaque yellow. Opaque means solid or not-transparent. This yellow is a medium-to-slow drier with medium to low tinting strength. Low tinting strength means that you need to add a lot of this paint to see its effect in a mixture. Its greenish bias makes it an ideal yellow to use with Phthalo Blue (Red Shade) to produce very clean secondary greens.

* Cadmium Yellow - Cadmium Yellow is a warm, orange leaning, and opaque yellow. This yellow is a medium-to-slow drier and has a high tinting strength. Its orange bias makes it an ideal yellow to use with Cadmium Red to produce very clean secondary oranges.

* Cadmium Red - Cadmium Red is a warm, orange leaning, and opaque red. This red is a slow drier and has a high tinting strength. Its orange bias makes it an ideal red to use with Cadmium Yellow to produce very clean secondary oranges.

* Permanent Rose - Permanent Rose is a cool, violet leaning, and transparent red. This red is a medium-to-slow drier and has a medium tinting strength. Its violet bias makes it an ideal red to use with French Ultramarine to produce very clean secondary violet.

* French Ultramarine - French Ultramarine is a warm, violet leaning, and semi-transparent blue. This blue is a slow drier and has a high tinting strength. Its violet bias makes it an ideal blue to use with Permanent Rose to produce very clean secondary violets.

* Phthalo Blue (Red Shade) - Phthalo Blue is a cool, green leaning, and transparent blue. This blue is a medium-to-slow drier and has a very high tinting strength. Its green bias makes it an ideal blue to use with Lemmon Yellow to produce very clean secondary greens.

* Titanium White - Titanium White is an opaque white and covers up just about any color. There are other whites such as Flake White and Zinc White. As a beginning artist you may want to avoid using Zinc White because it tends to crack when applied thickly.

* Ivory Black - Ivory Black is the cleanest of all the tube blacks and is extremely constructive in lots of mixtures. Other tube blacks include Lamp Black and Mars Black.

This simple palette is amazingly versatile and many minimal-minded professionals use nothing else. Because there are so few tube colors involved, becoming an expert in this palette is fairly easy.

Have heard about "cold-galvanizing" zinc rich paints.

Zinc oxide I think is the best.
