Pride of Owning French Furniture

The Regency style is very much a transitory period in which pieces from the Louis XIV period were transformed by the use of bronze fittings rather than reinvented. This period refined Louis XIV designs to be more practical and comfortable for everyday use. The Duke of Orleans introduced an era of lighter, more graceful French furniture. The beginnings of the Louis XV style start here, with the flowing curves, scallop shell and acanthus leaf we associate with the Louis XV Rococo style becoming prominent.

Nowadays, Regency chairs are more fashionable than ever. They look fabulous in living-rooms and bedrooms. They are comfortable, yet elegant.

Regarded by many as the Golden Age of French furniture, Louis XV’s reign was a time of peace and prosperity, and soon became one of the greatest periods in French furniture design: Rococo style.

It was frivolous, frothy and decadent, just like the King Louis XV and his official mistress Jeanne-Antoinette Poisson, also known as Madame de Pompadour. The Parisian aristocracy embraced new furniture items, such as the chaise longue and the “bergere chair”. Frames were usually gilded or painted. The rococo style featured love, music and nature-inspired motifs and themes, including shells, waves, birds, foliage, vines, flowers, seaweed, rocks and serpents.

Anybody who is passionate about French furniture will have a Louis XV chair on top of their style list. Moreover, nowadays, there are fantastic Louis XV reproduction chairs. You will be able to find them in different finishes and colours. You could even break the rules and have yours re-upholstered with a vibrant and modern fabric: classic with a twist. Whether you go for a classic look or a contemporary one, a Louis XV chair is the must have piece in the living-room, a statement item with lasting appeal. Bergere chairs and chaises longues are also incredibly popular these days.

For the bedroom, a Rococo style bed is the dream of every girl. It’s beautiful and frivolous, exactly what you want in a bedroom! There is no doubt our homes wouldn’t look the same if Rococo style has never existed!

When Rococo began to be considered too frivolous, a classical revival was inspired by the discovery of Pompeii in 1748 – the resulting style became known as neo-classicism or the classical revival. Designers also looked back to the more architectural French furniture of the Louis XIV period.

Gilded wood became popular again, and was used for ceremonial chairs and mirrors.

In our modern homes, a gilded mirror is the perfect focal point for a living room, above a fireplace or a console table. There are so many manufacturers of Baroque, Rococo and Neo-classical style mirrors that you will be spoiled for choice. They are elegant and gorgeous, and a mirror is always a great way to add depth and light into a room.

So why are we crazy for French furniture? Furnishing our homes with French furniture brings us back to those times of royalty and beauty, decadence and glamour. Our lives are complicated; we have stressful jobs and hardly any time for ourselves. That’s why a beautiful and elegant home, full of stylish French furniture can bring a bit of joy and glamour to our existence!

What color should I paint my bedroom?

My birthday is coming up soon, and I'm re-doing my room for my present. I have a white furniture set to go in my room, and the knobs are painted silver, I really need some advice on what color I should paint my room. If you have any ideas it would be great to hear them!

Things to keep in mind; I am soon 15, my room is fairly small, I get a good amount of light in my room, but I would like it a bit brighter.

Thanks a lot!

With white furniture and silver knobs you can use any color you want to and get a great look. Choose a beautiful bedding set, choose a light color from that and get your color custom mixed at Home Depot or the like. They can match anything and it isn't any more money. Take in a pillow sham or something like that, they won't damage it.

You can decorate your home interior using the shabby chic style. Some people express this style through the way they dress. When you dress in this manner it will be a reflection of quality as opposed to what is currently trendy. The shabby chic style creates a worn out appearance that is also stylish. As far as decorating the home is concerned you require furniture and furnishings that are worn out.

New furniture can also be utilized as long as it is distressed so that it looks like an antique. This way of decorating homes started in Britain. This is how people decorated their large country houses. You would find things such as faded curtains and worn out sofas in these country houses.

The look comes out well when vintage elements are combined with new items to create a warm atmosphere. The country house appearance can be achieved by utilizing certain colors such as blue, red, green and yellow. The colors have to be used together with white or off white.

Making use of patterned wallpapers and wallpaper borders will further enhance the country house look. The furniture that best suits this style should be made of solid wood such as oak and pine. Look for antiques as well because they further emphasize the country house appearance that you want to achieve. How do you paint furniture in the shabby chic style?

What kind of paint do you use and do you put a first coat of something on the wood first. and do you put a coat of something over the top to give it that silky smooth texture?
I am going to try to get that smooth white-off white Rachel Ashwell look.

Just a little advice that I learned the hard way. I like to find old furniture, strip the paint off, re-sand, seal and paint in acrylic on it (in a technique called Norwegian Rosemaling). I found a beautiful old table that was headed for the trash and worked for days getting it to the bare wood. Then I spent two weeks doing the beautiful scroll and flower work on top. Everything went perfectly until I put the polyurethane on it and it "fish-eyed" meaning it formed perfect circles all over the finish that refused to take any polyurethane or varnish. I was sick! All that work. After a lot of research I found that if someone had previously used a spray furniture polish, the oil would have penetrated the wood and therefore, the urethane would not adhere even tho the acrylic did. As you know, many acrylics dry dull and require a clear coat for sealing. So the piece was ruined. You can use oil based paint and probably not have that problem. I just prefer the pretty colors of latex or acrylic (water based) paint. Polyshield is the prettiest clear coat I have found for my furniture art and I got it at Sherwin Williams. Good luck!

Oil Painting Techniques that are Easy, Simple, FUN! For Sale

The purpose of this article is primarily in oil painting, it is my duty therefore to explore this subject. If the information in my about me is nothing new for a mere inventory of common knowledge, however, in the technical part, I refer to my research and my personal technique to compete in all areas with all the other painting techniques, including speed of execution on the field and transparency and precision.

The oil painting is a technique that aims to create an image on a surface by applying it to color with oil. The oil painting appeared in Europe in the late Middle Ages, where she was quickly adopted for the more easy to use, it allowed a greater variety of effects than existing techniques based wax, such as paint in encaustic, or water-based, such as tempera. It is the Dutchman who developed the oil colors from the 15th century, mixing pigments with linseed oil.

The pigments were ground on a porphyry marble table until until pasty paint, a little creamy.
The oil painting is characterized by drying (oxidation is more correct) relatively slow which does little to affect the color if it is a thin gray film caused by oxidation of the binder, clearly visible on dark colors, but that is easily absorbed by a layer of varnish, paint then finding all their splendor ... provided to make a careful selection of the pigments used. Therefore, it is easy to match colors, or mix them to create gradients, it is also easy to make changes to a work.

The artist is not obliged to stick to keys linear: it can use the glaze or wash, look for consistencies liquids, impasto, or spray paint on his support. The oil painting makes a rich color effects, contrast and chiaroscuro ... However, the choice of technique also depends on the color stability over time!

The oil painting is made of powdered pigments mixed with oil, air drying, or more precisely, the binder (linseed oil), which hardens into oxidized, which slow siccativity. To increase its speed siccativity, this oil is commonly added complementary products driers (beware additions lead compounds that darken the pigment over time).

The pigment should be insoluble, chemically inert, and does not discolor. It is typically used as a binder of linseed oil, poppy (poppy oil) or nuts. Finally, some argue that the addition of a varnish paint, varnish as Damar, allow a better homogeneity. Since the 19th century, the colors are sold in tin collapsible tubes.

The support of an oil painting is very important: indeed, if the paper allows a good conservation work, a canvas is superior quality. We also find cotton cloth or burlap stretched over a frame or glued (that is to say, stuck) on wood is a medium convenient but fragile panel wood tends to swell or crack; Finally, the backup of a mural depends on the humidity of the wall.

Support is coated with a primer, a thin layer of plaster-based or other material added gypsum glue. This primer serves to make the media less absorbent, and it also helps to get a regular painted surface, neither too rough nor too smooth. White in color, it stretches into several regular layers (one or two layers in the paintings of commerce, was 7-10 additional primers it is advisable to add to get excellent glaze by narrowing the risk of AMBUS).

The oil painting traditionally includes several steps: this applies to the painting "traditional" not for my own personal technique which aims at maximum capacity and spontaneous labor (total absence of preliminary drawing for example, that prevents: waste of time, danger of alteration of the pigments that cover them, lack of spontaneity, which undermines the whole work, especially in transparency). First, traditionally, the design is sketched on the primer pencil, charcoal or paint thinned with turpentine. Different color areas are then painted slightly and several times with a thicker paint, in which we add oil and varnish. The nature of the support contributes greatly to the conservation of paintings.

Pigments are colored elements that have been ground into powder and then mixed with a binder to be used by the artist. This is the result of this mixture which is characterized by a pasty substance called painting. The amount of binder used depends on the nature of the pigments and the size of the particles of powder, which is very variable.

Binders of low quality undermine the conservation works, despite the quality of the pigments. Detailed knowledge of pigment chemistry are essential to the serious artist, concerned with the preservation of his work, do I mention this knowledge in this site (chemical pigment).

The oil paint applied usually with bristle brush or badger hair or sable, more flexible. You can also use a flexible spatula, wide blade, called "knife", or paint with your fingers. For these "traditional" implementation of the work can be done in a few sessions, or take months or even years of work. After drying, the paint varnish, to protect it from dirt and enhance color.

If the practice of oil painting is old, it was not until the 15th century and the Flemish painter Jan Eyck there appears a new technique for allowing easier processing, a color rendering of light and a risk of fullness (chemical weathering of the painted surface causing undesirable dullness) less important.

Van Eyck experimentation this technique, while maintaining the conventions of tempera, with a detailed drawing, executed on a plate coated with a plaster coating, then covered with several transparent glazes. In Italy, it was Antonello da Messina, who popularized this method, which the painters of the Renaissance took advantage of all resources.

That the Venetians that we must move to painting on canvas, which allowed to ride during a trip. These artists adopted a freer style, characterized by oil glaze on a monochrome background simple past "tempera".

The artists of Holland Rembrandt and Frans Hals and Velasquez Spanish orientate their research towards more slurred. In the 19th century, advances in chemistry brought new pigments, bright and shiny. With the invention of tubes of tin, that could collapse and that supplanted the old bladders, artists were now able to paint nature outside the studio.

With the new artificial additives which allow to preserve the freshness of the painting, it became easier to use method of impasto. Paint a background was no longer a necessity. The French Impressionists and their paintings covered with multitudes of small touches of bright colors, placed directly on the canvas.

If acrylic paint, easier to use, has nowadays preferred by many artists because of its ease of application (close watercolor), the sensuality of the medium and the interest in traditional techniques allows the Oil Painting retain its attraction.

It was necessary to exceed the speed of execution own acrylic paint which, although some claim (for commercial purposes. Maybe), is still far from offering guarantees stabilities of oil paint ( because of the importance of liquid additives required, without which the painting becomes rubbery inside the tubing, which is not the case with oil painting.) It was necessary to advance the technical work oil by using all the scientific knowledge about the choice of pigments (pigments fifteen actual quality is amply sufficient for the palette of a professional painter) and find new work processes that allow total creative freedom while adapting to the rapid evolution of this third millennium.

This technique "revolutionary" who allowed me to get twice the title of "World Champion Master of pictorial art, and one of my disciples, Luxembourg Roby Diederich, to rank third in the competition in Geneva, I explain in detail in the pages of the "technical" in my book, and this site ..

By demonstrating, through my art, it is possible to work as quickly oil and watercolor and acrylic, without preliminary sketches, with a minimum of pigment, without additional additives to avoid overloading pigments and distort with time (yellowing, browning, cracking, etc..), with a technique that allows both the high precision flat areas (see Working with a magnifying glass) in any style (figurative, abstract , etc..), the Painter can finally mastered his work with a minimum of stress ... while creating works of a technical quality never matched!

I note that the time is long siccativity, I forbid the use of any desiccant additive (usually lead-based, except manufacturing, the French legislation banning) not harm the quality of the pigments but ... web on time never fails to dry! It is precisely this new technique is called "Impressionism-modern.

how do you make a wood wash paint?

I am wanting to wood wash my door in a light black/grey, but I cant seem to find this colour anywhere. Is there a way that I can make this texture
this is an internal door
Hi thanks for getting back to me yes this is a raw wood door. Nothing has been added yet

Gort . . . wash isn't texture, it's technique and color; being that you want black/grey I need to know how the door stands right now in order to competently walk you through the correct steps and technique to achieve this finish, i.e., is the door raw wood, clear coated, painted etc.

If you get back to me on the above I'll help you with the finishing schedule to get exactly what it is you want.

**Got your message. OK, here's what you need to do -

(1) Pick the color that you want from the paint department and then look next to or below that color and choose the next darker shade and get this mixed in a quart of flat paint.

(2) With #220 sandpaper and a finishing sander sand the unfinished wood door on all planes until it has a smooth feel. Dust with either a vacuum or compressed air and then tack cloth the door down to remove any remaining dust particles (nothings worse then debris in a finish).

(3) Now here's where I need to get with you for more detail if you want this to have a metal/industrial look. Right now I'll assume you just want a straight wash.
Cut the Quart of paint with a pint water to thin it; with a rag or sponge work it over the door; if it's not dark enough let the first application completely soak in and then re-apply until you get the color you want. If the colors too dark, take a second damped sponge an systematically work from top to bottom or bottom to top, wiping the door down and effectively removing someof the color saturation, i.e. thinning out the color. In either case, the even application and distribution is key. The differences in the grain densities and patterns will provide the washed appearance.

(4) Once the wash is applied and dry I apply a coat of sanding sealer as the moisture from the coating will lift the grain. Now, be sure to use a waterborne sanding sealer because it'll set up and dry in about 20 minutes, and it'll bond to the latex/acrylic paint you used as a wash better. This is available in the home centers and most hardware stores.

(5) When the sealers dried you need to re-sand the door, this time using #320 sandpaper and vac/air and tack it down again.

(6) Here's where we get the look you want in the finished product. Apply a top and final finish coat of Min-Wax "Polycrylic" Urethane in satin, semi-gloss- or gloss to the door. I prefer satin and two coats will give you a beautiful protective finish that will last.

There are applications where waterborne products perform exceptionally well. . . this is one of them. It won't yellow as with traditional petroleum based urethanes; the finish dries faster, and it is harder/tougher when cured.

The conclude of the movie sees Greased Lightening carrying the lovebirds up into the clouds.

Founder of DeLorean Motor Business, John DeLorean was born on January 6, 1925 in Detroit, Michigan. The engineer will probable be well-known by most for acquiring the DeLorean DMC 12, the vehicle which features in the classic film, 'Back to the Foreseeable future.'

The engineer was also positioned into the public spotlight in the early eighties for his suspected involvement in drug trafficking which was believed to be to raise cash for his motor company which was on the verge of financial meltdown. DeLorean's provider went in bankruptcy shortly after, though DeLorean was cleared of all expenses brought versus him due to apparent entrapment by officials.

DeLorean Motor Company was shaped right after DeLorean left Normal Motors. In the seventies DeLorean designed the DeLorean Security Car, a prototype two seater which sported a human body styled by the Italian car designer, Giorgetto Giugiaro. The car shortly went into production, fitted with the Douvrin V6 engine and named the DMC 12.

Dunmurry in Northern Ireland was the location for the new creation factory for the motor vehicle, with a one particular hundred million pound incentive from the Northern Ireland Growth Company. The new factory developed quite a few work in Northern Ireland, around two thousand at its highest. The engine unit used in the car was manufactured by Renault, who also constructed the factory for DeLorean. Lotus aided with the patterns. DeLorean's use of the factory was brief lived, even so. The corporation was held by a receiver significantly less than two decades following the factory was constructed, and then quickly shut down.

These autos have all been on the hit-record by Jeremy Clarkson and the gang for the worst supercars actually designed. Remarkably, a whole lot of them have been produced about twenty years in the past apart from the most current Swiss Weber More quickly One particular released in 2008. With an remarkable top speed of 260 mph the only drawback is that no-a person has actually essentially driven this automobile and that it was developed without having the 'sex-appeal' of much more up to date designs.

Extra not long ago released to the public was the Japanese model the Mitsuoka Orochi in 2005. James May well raved about this certain automobile and gave it large appraise on the other hand the 'inspired by Honda NSX' design was nowhere as sleek, stylish as a supercar will need to be. Nor was it acceptably quickly adequate to be labelled a supercar, just like the Panther 6 which was released in 1977 that reached speeds of 200mph but was in no way actually documented.

Surprisingly there is a Ferrari and an Aston Martin Virage in the prime 10. The two created for lazier generations that didn't appeal to the mass markets and cobbled with each other employing all the skill of a flat pack from IKEA.

The DeLorean DMC-12 launched in 1995 in the eyes of our Jeremy Clarkson moved more like a metro than it did a smooth, costly supercar and similarly the Vector M12 released in 1995 was termed 'the worst auto in the overall world' because of its low spec finish and develop excellent to rival a garden tent.

Commissioned as an 'F1 spec car for the road' the Caparo T1 could do -100mph in 5 seconds having said that this specific model broke down or blew up extra than it did achieve prime speeds. The Jaguar XJ220 unleashed in 1992 was also of equivalent 'quality', shoppers ended up provided all the promise of a hyper vehicle and were delivered the disappointment of a 4WD V12 engine rather.

Last but not least on the listing, the Lamborghini Jalpa. Launched in 1981 this supercar endured more since of the hefty luxury total price tag as do most of these overpriced, overrated supercars, I assume I'd instead commit significantly less income and invest in an Audi A4.

Many folks say the 80's had by far the flashiest autos of all time. Not only have been they in movies, they ended up on Tv, in video video games and in our dreams. From Gullwing doors to racing vents, Targa tops to big spoilers, every person has their favourite. Was it the Ferrari Testarossa or potentially the Delorean from Back again to the Foreseeable future? It really is wonderful to cast our minds back again to an fascinating decade...

Ferrari Testarossa - heading into production in 1984, the Testarossa was the successor to the Berlinetta Boxer. A Pininfarina-designed motor vehicle, the Testarossa was originally developed from 1984 to 1991. A two-doorway coup?, the Testarossa had a fixed roof and a 12-cylinder engine. Following the manufacturing of the Testarossa followed the 512 TR and F512 M, which have been produced between 1992 and 1996.

Lamborghini Countach - a mid-motor sports automobile, the Countach was made by Lamborghini in between 1974 and 1990. Not only did its style and design pioneer the wedge-shaped, sharp angled look of the day, it also popularised it. Back again in 2004, Sports Auto Worldwide, the American car or truck magazine, named the Countach as the amount 10 on the listing of Major Sports activities cars of the 1980's. Major Gear produced it range a single on their list of Sexiest Supercars of All Time. Out there in a four.0L, 5.0L and five.2L, all engines ended up a potent V12.

DeLorean DMC-12 - at first manufactured in Northern Ireland, the DMC-twelve was manufactured available for the American marketplace in 1981. Most generally known as the DeLorean, it was the only design ever made by the corporation, and featured gull-wing doors. The car or truck became iconic for its physical appearance as a time machine in the Back again to the Long term movies.

How can I makeover my cheap Ikea coffee table?

I have an Ikea Lack coffee table (http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/40104294). It's lasted a few years, but now the veneer top is terribly scratched. It's just veneer over particle board, so I know I can't just simply paint it, but I'd like to make it over in some way. I know nothing about this stuff, so I'm open to any suggestions! Is is possible to buy new veneer and just stick it on? Is there a way to glue tiles to it? Maybe glossy black ceramic tiles? Other ways to revamp it? Again, I really don't know anything about these things, so some sort of guidance on where to find instructions on how to do any of these things would be much appreciated!
By the way, I do realize that I can replace it for less than it will probably cost to redo it, but I'd love something a bit less plain.

You can use tiles to recover it, but you would need some skill to do that, plus the grouting that needs to be done as well.'
Then you will need to prep the table, to get as much of the old veneer off as possible.
There is one easy way, to make it over, and that's to check out, those Vinyl floor times.
They come in a variety of colors and styles. and can be cut with a good pair of scissors.
You could do a mosaic with broken flat color dishes or tiles, which looks great,
Or you can measure the table top, and visit Home Depot, find some nice thin sheet of plywood, that you can stain and lacquer, which would to the trick as well. The store will do the cutting for you, at a small charge.
Even simpler, use Contact Paper, which is about the easiest and they come in rolls are easy to cut and lay down. You can get them in wood grain, white. black, or many patterns and colors.
Just make sure, what ever you use, the table top is flat and clean and smooth.

Shabby Chic Painted Furniture

A friend of mine is redecorating her home at the moment and I am really looking forward to see what she does as she has always been at the cutting edge of style, both in her personal appearance and in her surroundings.  One of the key looks she wants to create in her home is with shabby chic painted furniture. She tells me that shabby chic painted furniture is the in thing at the moment and I am sure she is right. As she explained, shabby chic painted furniture is recycled furniture that has been restored and repainted to ensure a really contemporary look.

My friend said that one of the reasons why shabby chic painted furniture is such a key trend at the moment is because shabby chic furniture is generally made up of old or vintage pieces which means that it is more well made and solid than the modern variety.  Not only that but shabby chic painted furniture is often extremely stylish with lots of detail and, again, these are not features that one would see very often in new furniture.  Of course, sourcing this type of furniture can be quite difficult as true bargains are not that easy to come by, particularly when this type of furniture is so popular.

However, recently my friend heard of a company called www.peppercornhouse.com which sells lots of different recycled pieces, including the shabby chic painted furniture that my friend is so keen to get her hands on.  When she visited their website, she was amazed at the range of shabby chic painted furniture that they had on offer and she quickly found all the pieces that she wanted. She is now awaiting delivery of her shabby chic painted furniture and she is absolutely thrilled with everything that she has chosen. I must admit that I am envious of her style and cannot wait to see the whole house after its transformation.

Peppercornhouse.com can supply the widest range of shabby shabby chic painted furniture, recycled to help the environment, with all our shabby chic painted furniture available at great prices.

Can I varnish over painted furniture surface?

I have some lovely painted antique furniture and I just learned that they might contain lead paint. With a baby coming I want to apply varnish on top of the painted surface. Is it possible? any preparation needed? I can't sand it because it will cause lead dust. Any varnish product to recommend? What do u think about the Olympic varnish products? Thank you.

Check with a paint co. isn't there some kind of test kit, to test for lead paint. Maybe if there is lead, you can put a sealer on it.

I can paint my laminate countertops?

I love to get new countertops, but they are very cheap. I heard of the paint, but how does it work? Any suggestion to update the look of my boring counters would be fantastic. Thank you!

You can but I would recommend against it. No matter what it is portrayed to be repeated from time to time. As a painting business that I met this question before. If you just have to paint the top, do that. 1) start to make sure surface is clean and dry. 2) Use a primer by Glidden called "CLIP" It This is a latex primer that stick against you. It is best to test a small spot. Allow to dry overnight and see if you can easily scratch with a fingernail. If not, then you can prepare the whole meter. 3) Use a top coat is recommended for the type of surface being painted. In other words, use regular wall paint. It does not work for your application

Tips on Decorating Using Cottage Style Furniture

Cottage style furniture is no longer just limited to town and country houses anymore. This style has found its way in the houses of chic and hip city folks. Often referred to as the "shabby chic" this type of furnishings are fast becoming the new trend simply because of its vintage and nostalgic appeal. Many people who like the shabby chic look say that this type of home furnishings give their homes a little Parisian feel. Everything from drawers, cabinets, side tables, to chairs, book cases and beds that look like they came from a flea market somewhere in Europe. Another great thing about cottage style furniture is the romantic feel it lends to a place. They are also very classic pieces and would never go out of style.

Most of these "shabby chic" furnishings are either painted a nice white color or are distressed giving off that worn, aged feel. The style is also a little carefree, with a very light almost effervescent appeal to it which is perfect for people who are very easy going and laid back. So what makes something "shabby chic"? More often than not, it's the use of light colors and comfortable as opposed to expensive fabrics that makes it "shabby chic". Every piece of furnishing is easy on the eye and ignites a feeling of nostalgia, whether it is real vintage or just made to look like one.

Another appeal of having cottage style furniture is the fact that it doesn't cost as much as more modern looking furnishings do. You can simply go to a local flea market or used furniture store and you can find some really good pieces. You can also refurbish your old furnishings to make them look "shabby chic". For example, you can take an old side table that you haven't used in a while and paint it in a nice white color afterwards, you can make it look distressed which is the look of the most shabby chic furnishings by using sandpaper on parts of it. As simple as that, you can make your own cottage style furniture without having to spend a penny. But if you aren't handy with such things, there are many websites that specialize in this type of furniture and they offer good quality stuff. Most of the time, you will find new custom furnishings that were made to look vintage and then there are those which offer items that come from flea markets and were refurbished by the seller themselves. These items can sell at really good prices but the more antique ones might fetch a higher price tag.

So you want to decorate your house using cottage style furniture? Well here are some easy to do tips which you can incorporate to your renovation:

1. When you think of this type of furniture you immediately think of timeworn, old pieces that have that heirloom appeal. So why don't you try looking at your current furnishings and see which one could be taken and worked on to get that sort of style. All you need are some paint and sanding tools.

2. Texture. Add small things like shells to your current fixtures and this would instantly add that cottage style appeal.

Painting furniture (jewelry armoire)?

I know I'm getting a white jewelry armoire from my friend for Christmas and was wondering how I would go about painting it black (or spray paint, whatever is more convenient) since white does not go with the rest of my bedroom furniture. Since the piece of furniture has never been used before do I still have to go about sanding and priming it. Any advice is appreciated!

Here is a link to what the armoire looks like, if that helps.

Remove all the drawers and all the hardware. Sand the entire surface and wipe off any sanding dust. Prime and paint using semi or gloss sheen. Replace the hardware, and re-assemble.

Big job, because of all the decorations and turnings. Use spray pant and primer.

Garden vs. Beach Cottage Design Themes

Cottage Garden Design

The garden theme is well suited to people who love communing with nature, because it brings that airy atmosphere right into their own houses.

-Doors, Windows and Floors-If you have large windows in your house, and screen or sliding doors, you are off to a head start. Sheer window treatments are ideal, and install pull-up shades for privacy. Wooden floors or those with tiles can be complemented with a mat made of natural materials (woven, bamboo, etc) or of floral prints.

-Color-White reflects light and should be dominant in the décor. If there is not much white in the walls, ceilings or floors, choose furniture, accessories and fabrics in this color. As for the walls, they can best reflect the feeling of a garden if you paint them in earth colors. Green, brown, and gold shades can all work well.

-Prints- Even a garden theme can be one of two styles- summer or spring. If you have chosen your preference, allow the prints in the room to reflect that. You can have it predominantly floral, or go with leafy prints. Birds and butterflies are another option. Fill the rooms with framed pictures, yours or otherwise, of beautiful gardens.

-Furniture- Rattan, bamboo and wicker are all options for your chairs. Match up different pieces by using similar or complementing color schemes and prints. One idea is to use couches in a solid earth color and accent them with floral-print cushions. Wrought-iron and wood are both good materials for bedroom furniture. Coffee tables can be improvised from a tree stump or huge animal figurine, even from old pieces of patio furniture.

Beach Cottage Decorating Ideas

If your choice of outdoor relaxation spot is by the shore, perhaps bringing some of the beach into your home will do wonders.

-Atmosphere- Going to the beach is so liberating because you can get away from all the clutter in your home and workplace. Take your cue from this idea and relieve your house of clutter. Don’t hoard. Hold a garage sale for your unnecessary things.

-Color Palette- Soft sea-inspired colors should dominate. Light blue, coral and shell shades, and sandy hues all replicate the feeling of being at the seashore. If you are not into very light shades, try teal, spa blue, and brown.

-Walls, Windows and Floors- Use bead board paneling for walls, since this is a basic in cottage design. Windows can have roll-down reed shades, or wood blinds. Curtains and valances aren’t recommended because they contradict the airy feel, but if you insist on using them, keep them light and simple. Wood or natural floors work well with a throw rug in the right color, or have your floor tiled and balance it with a rug of contrasting texture.

-Furniture- Light wood furniture of painted wood, wicker or pine is best suited to the beach cottage design. Ottomans give a homey feeling and can be used for many purposes.

-Accents- Have a lot of “sea treasures” at every turn. Accent mirrors and frames with seashells, or gather them into a bowl and display them on an end table. Candles, reeds, and nautical items can be added to the décor. You can hit garage sales for old beach chairs or you can even recycle your own.

Whether you choose the garden or beach theme, make sure that the finished look is one that inspires relaxation. A well-put-together look will make coming home feel like going on a vacation.

Hex Signs on Hope Chests

People of every time period have been superstitious about witches, mainly evil witches that would do them harm. They would take any and every precautionary step necessary to repel witch spells from entering their homes. Some German immigrants that came to Pennsylvania starting in the 1700's used 'hex' designs to ward off evil spells. Hex means witch in German and of course hex is also a Greek root word meaning six. These beautiful six-sided geometric designs, hexagrams, were painted over doorways,on barns and on what was considered a very important piece of furniture, the hope chest.

The hope chest, also known as a dowry chest or blanket chest, was the piece of furniture in every newly weds' home which held household items like quilts, bed linen and baby clothes. More importantly, these blanket chests held the family heirlooms as well. So in order to prevent any evil spell damage in the home in case their outside counter measures failed, hope chests were given these beautiful designs. These hex designs were also to ensure good luck for the household. Some groups of German immigrants, such as the Amish and the Mennonites, rarely, if ever, had these types of designs placed on buildings or on their blanket chests. These religious groups were known as the 'plain people' and their lives were ran accordingly. Every aspect of life needed to be plain such as clothing, the interior of their homes and their furniture. They rarely added any embellishments of any type to their possessions. The religious Germanic groups known to wear 'fancy' dress such as the Lutherans and other reformed groups, would have used hex designs on their hope chests. Some historians contend that hex designs were never meant to chase away evil spells, but rather to just add a nice touch to other wise drab furnishings.

Hex signs are normally geometric designs varying from the extremely simple to the complex. Many woodcrafters learned to add these symbols to homes and blanket chest furniture in a very stylish manner, incorporating the tree of life, hearts, circles(the sun), birds, stars, foliage and flower design elements. These design symbols had specific meanings so families would incorporate those they favored into a family design. The meanings for the most used of these symbols were: the tree of life for longevity, hearts for love and kindness, tulip for faith, 3 tulips for faith, hope and charity, star for luck, sun wheel for warmth and fertility, the circle for eternity or infinity, doves for peace and contentment, four pointed star for a bright day, eagle for good health, strength and courage, horse head for protecting against animal disease and buildings from lightning strikes, maple leaf for contentment, oak leaf for strength, 4 quarter moons for the seasons of the year, rain drops for fertility, abundance and rain, rosette for good luck and to keep away bad luck and evil, twelve pointed rosette for a joyous month each month of the year, triple star for success, wealth and happiness, unicorn for virtue, piety and the belief in God, wavy border for smooth sailing through life and birds (distelfinks) for good luck.

These designs were very colorful when added to hope chests. This created a warm atmosphere in the room where the blanket chest was placed. Of course the colors chosen for the hex designs also had meanings for these families. Red stood for strong emotions, yellow stood for the love of man, green stood for growing things, blue stood for protection, white stood for purity and brown stood for Mother Earth.

People now use hex designs mainly for decorative uses, especially on blanket chests, although there are those who use them for folk magic. Have fun with these designs. Make one with meaning for yourself and your family. After all, the basic meaning of a hex design is to give oneself good luck. Create a special hope chest for your family by painting your favorite designs on the outside. What can I do to the top of a cedar chest to make it look presentable?

I inherited this old Cedar Chest, that would look great in my living room as it matches the wood of other furniture. The problem is the cedar chest itself is in good shape, with the exeption of the top which is scraped and worn, and has all sorts of weird colors coming through. I guess I could paint the top of it, but are there any other crafty suggestions that I could do simply to fix up the top( the lid) so to speak. Right now I have a funky Afgan (sp) covering it with another cover, which looks ok, but I would like to take them off and have the chest speak for itself----tiles, contact paper, paint.....I am open!

You already seem to know the answer. Try decoupage. Simple white glue mixed with water and a few old family pics(copies of course), cuttings from magazines, wrapping paper, tissue paper and viola' you have a beautiful keepsake. Good luck

Decorating Your Kitchen In The French Country Style

When you designing a kitchen many people will focus purely on the efficiency and organization of their kitchen, but they should not forget to give their kitchen some personality as well as it being functional. So when looking for a way to give your kitchen some personality then why not consider having a French Country kitchen decorating theme.

A well designed French country kitchen will make anyone feel as if they have just walked into a cottage in a rural part of France. Such kitchens reflect the French people's joy of living as well as the importance of family and friends in their lives. To produce the vibrant and romantic feel of a French country kitchen there are a number of small touches which will help you to achieve the finished result.

Firstly we will look at colour as this plays a major role in any French country kitchen and were to you walk in to a French country cottage then more often than not you would find the walls painted either in a butter or mustard yellow colour. The cupboards in such a kitchen will be painted either cornflower blue or even salmon pink to accentuate the colour of the walls. But if you find these colours a little to strong then why not paint your walls blue and use lighter shades as accents.

For any French country kitchen natural light is also very important in its design. For many you will find that they only use simple roman shades as window dressings. The fabric is usually either canvas or toile and it can be striped or just a solid block colour, but if you want to be a bit more adventurous you could use a fabric with flowers, vegetables or herbs on it instead. One thing that you will find in any French country kitchen is lavender so why not have a dried bunch hanging from a hook in the ceiling or on a wall or just place a clump of it in a wall vase. In this way you will be able to bring the scent of a traditional French country kitchen in to your own.

Any accessories that you choose for your French country kitchen must be functional. Why not look for a terracotta or copper vase in which you can store all your cooking utensils. Also look at using free standing racks made from either copper or wrought iron for holding plants etc., in. Another good accessory to include in your design is a ceramic trivet in either the shape of a rooster or with a herb design that you can place on the wall when it is not being used on your kitchen table.

The best type of table for a French country kitchen decorating scheme is a plain pine work table that can also be used for family and friends to gather round for meals and just simply to sit and socialize at. But when choosing a table ensure that it will not interrupt the traffic flow through your kitchen.

How do I make a kitchen table look 'rustic'?

I have gotten all the varnish off and sanded an old kitchen table. The look I'm wanting is that rustic black look and I'm not sure what to do now. Do I use a spray paint or a paint brush? What do you put on the table after it's painted so it won't chip and so I can clean it?

On decorating shows, I have seen them beat it with a chain to give it that 'well used' look. Then paint over it lightly with a dark color (paintbrush) to fill in the holes/chinks/gouges. You will need to paint or seal over that. Use a good quality water-resistant varnish over the whole thing, using several coats on the top of the table.
