I'm an amateur oil painter and have only used canvas to paint on...Can finished wood, such as that you can purchase in a crafts store, be used to do an oil painting?? I'm wanting to make a miniature painting as a gift, and size wise, those small pieces of wood looked perfect, but not sure if it would work with the oil paint.
Definitely. But like canvas, you will need to prime the wood otherwise it will warp because of the oils.
If you wanted to keep the background of the wood the same after you prime it instead of having it all white like a regular canvas, you can find transparent gesso in some art stores. However, I like to use Liquitex Matte Medium. This way, I can make transparent layers with the wood showing through but not worry about warping.
I prefer Liquitex Matte Medium over the transparent gesso because it is smoother and extremely versatile. The transparent gesso is grainier.
