Painting Glove
Painting Glove

Oil painting, gloves or no gloves?
Taking survey: how many oil painting artists out there actually wear gloves to paint, and if so, what kind? How about barrier cream - would that suffice just as well? How toxic are the pigments? Are there any actual health complications, rather than theories, that have arisen from use of color pigments, such as cadmium?
So many opinions, but yet to see any evidence/facts. Obviously it would not be wise to ingest any paint, mediums, or thinners so please keep those sarcasms to yourself. I am a beginner, a mother, a nurse, wife, and pet owner trying to be safe without being ridiculous. Personally I wear gloves at work all night and do not wish to do the same with what I do for pleasure. (the smell of ANY type of disposable glove is way worse than linseed oil - which I like the smell of)
So to the ARTISTS of the world, what do YOU do?
No gloves... but I'm not a pig when I paint. Sometimes in a first coat if I'm doing a wash I'll get paint on my hands and when I'm mixing I might get linseed oil on my hands, but I wash right after.
There are quite a few pigments out there there are toxic... lead white, any of the cadmiums, chromium, etc.
Just be careful, stay tidy and you shouldn't have a problem.
